Flying insects such as flies are probably one of the most annoying creatures to ever exist on this planet. They thrive in warm, moist conditions and are especially attracted to decaying organic matter or overripe food. Also, their preference for unhygienic environment makes them carriers of various diseases that are harmful to us.
That said, their very existence in and around your house or business premises can affect your emotions, contaminate food products as well as put your business reputation at risk. While your regular fly swatter can help eliminate them, it isn’t sufficient to keep them away from your house or business premises.
Rather than wasting your time and effort to swat all the flying insects, an insect light trap may just be the key to eliminating all of them from your house or business premises. In this post, we’ll discuss insect light traps, insect attraction to UV light, and the types of insect light trap available at AntiPest.
What is Insect Light Trap?
Insect light traps (ILTs) are often used in pest control management programmes to attract certain flying insects using ultraviolet (UV) light. In some cases, ILTs are used to monitor seasonal and distributional patterns of pest occurrence.
That said, the trap works by emitting a spectrum of UV-A light, which is between 350 and 400 nanometres. It provides a maximum attraction for insects with positive photo-syntaxis like flies, and also it’s a range of UV radiation that’s harmless to humans. We can’t see the light, but flying insects can as it helps guide them in flight.
Why are insects attracted to UV light?
Flying insects are likely to be attracted to insect light traps due to warmth. Depending on whether the insect killer uses high-voltage electricity or sticky glue boards, the flies are either zapped, causing them to explode and spraying their body parts some distance away from the zapper, or trapped in a layer of glue.
